On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh – Matthew 2:11
After the Magi, or the Wise Men, saw the Lord Jesus Christ’s Star, and followed it, they found Him. They then bowed down before Him and worshipped Him. But how did they worship Him? Did they sing songs to the Lord? Did they offer up Prayers to Him? No they didn’t. Inasmuch as singing songs of Worship to the Lord, and offering up Prayers to Him is essential, worship also demands Giving. The Magi understood something. They themselves were kings from the East, and they came to honour another King. They therefore had to bring Gifts, expensive Gifts.
Deuteronomy 16:16b-17 says, ‘…and they shall not appear before the Lord empty: Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.’ God commanded Israel to give Gifts to Him when they worshipped Him. God is a King and the Lord Jesus Christ is God. When you appear before Him, you must never do so empty-handed. Like the Magi, you and I are Kings. That’s why the Lord Jesus Christ is the King of Kings. He’s not only the King of the Kings of the earth, He’s also Ruler over the Kings of His Kingdom, us.
Like the Magi, when we worship the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is Himself a King, we must bring Gifts that are worthy of a King. The Magi didn’t bring change to the Lord. They brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. These were expensive Gifts according to the economy of the time. Worship to the Lord must always be expensive. It must cost us something, whether it’s in songs of Worship, Prayer or Giving of Gifts. The next time you receive Ministry, worship the Lord, but not only in songs and Prayers. Let’s also worship the Lord with our substance.
CONFESSION
The Lord Jesus Christ is the King of Kings. He’s deserves Gifts befitting a King. Like the Kings from the East, I’m wise and worship the Lord with expensive Gifts. Amen.
